At The Galfrid School, it is our aim to improve the outcomes for our children in all areas of mathematics. To achieve this aim, the children are supported and challenged appropriately through quality first teaching in ability set groups.
As a school, we teach from the WhiteRose Maths Hub scheme of work, which provides brilliant opportunities for fluency, reasoning and problem solving within the National Curriculum. The children experience a rich 1¼ hour maths lesson daily. The intention of every lesson is to provide: confidence in counting skills, mental numeracy strategies, as well as their main activity for the session which will cover new learning to move their understanding on.
In Early Years, most Maths learning takes place in small, adult led groups with our Maths Hub class room. This environment is rich in number and allows the children to be immersed in their maths learning in order to practice their learned skills in different contexts.
Children in reception are working towards completing the baseline assessment in readiness for Year 1.
Year 1 and 2
In Key Stage 1, children will work within numbers 0-100 ensuring they have a good awareness of place value. They will become confident with the processes of addition, subtraction, division and multiplication; by use of many different representations and methods to build their understanding. Throughout the years they will learn about 2D and 3D shapes, using measurement, recording data and using money.
At the end of Year 2 the children will undertake the end of key stage SATs assessment to assess their understanding and ability within the Key Stage 1 curriculum.
Years 3, 4, 5 and 6
The children should enter Key Stage 2 with a good understanding of the four operations. They will now work on learning formal methods and applying them to challenging multi-step problems. Their reasoning and problem solving skills should be improving as they journey through KS2. Key Stage 2 children cover a range of topics such as: finding the area and perimeter of a shape; calculating missing angles in a triangle; drawing and reading graphs; or finding and explaining rules for number patterns.
At the end of Year 6 the children will undertake the end of key stage SATs assessment to assess their understanding and ability within the Key Stage 2 curriculum, which will follow them to high school.
